On 18 June in Amsterdam, Prometheus Gallery opens its new space at Localie Hub with an exhibition by Aya Alexandra Demina.
The exhibition brings together works from different periods of the artist’s practice — from early pieces made prior to migration, to textile works and large woven compositions developed during her years in Armenia and later in France.
At the centre of Demina’s practice is a sustained inquiry into Chuvash identity, memory, migration, and female experience. Working with weaving, embroidery, and found materials, she constructs works in which personal biography intersects with broader questions of cultural transmission, displacement, and the fragile persistence of inherited knowledge.
Rather than treating identity as a fixed origin, the exhibition approaches it as a field of continuous reconstruction — shaped by distance, translation, and the uneven circulation of histories. In this sense, the works can be read through a decolonial lens, not as assertion, but as a slow reworking of what has been fragmented, silenced, or dispersed.
For the artist, the thread becomes both material and metaphor: a way of connecting generations, geographies, and lived experiences. Many of the materials used in the works were gifted by friends, collaborators, and members of different communities and diasporas, turning each piece into a space of encounter and shared authorship.
